Seasonal Transitions:
This piece, “Letter to Winter” is about that transition from winter to spring–where you first become aware of the change in light and color.
I wanted to capture that cool blue beauty of winter as it also starts to thaw and reveal the warm, raw, even dirty spring world waiting underneath.
My Process
I used scans of pressed Queen Anne’s lace to express the frostiness on the windows in winter as well as to suggest the first flowers of spring. The triangle shape in the center is from a scan of an envelope–again hoping to suggest 2 things–a home/cave as well as an open letter. I used a scan of a flattened bottle cap to reinforce that house/cave/entrance feeling with a guinea hen feather standing out front to invite you in.
For some reason, this piece took me ages to finish. I was 95% almost done last summer, but I couldn’t figure out what I needed to do to make it right until many months later. Maybe I just needed to be immersed in actual cool blue light of winter again.
This piece is on brushed metal and is : 36″ x 36.”
