Book Arts & Sketchbooks
I love ancient book forms and the book as an object. But I also love the quick and dirty world of “zine” making. And in the last few years, I’ve also taken to using a sketchbook more seriously, as I’ve gotten into the idea of private art making and a personal spiritual art practice.
Sometimes, I make my own little sketchbooks—I’ll work on several loose pages at the same time, then combine them into one mini sketchbook—all ~9” x 12”. I also like to make tiny sketchbooks from a single piece of paper—in the classic “zine”format. Both are surprisingly satisfying.
This little handmade accordion book has crepe de chine front and back covers that I dyed and hand screened and the accordion pages are black satin that I discharged dyed with a woodcut that I carved with the word sacred. The back of the accordion pages are tissue that I printed with a block from my collection of vintage Indian printing blocks.

For my newsletter, The Pink Teacup, I offer anyone who subscribes at the “founding” level a quarterly zine that I physically mail out to them. This is my firsts one. I went kind of overboard and really, it turned into a mashup between a handmade book and a zine. It’s called a “Z” book because it is folding like a “z” and you can read it from either direction. I hand printed every cover and wrote all the text. I had a great time making this book. It’s a limited edition so there are no more.
