Works on Metal

This series using metal as a substrate went on for several years. Each piece is a combination of printed image and layers of oil glazes, ink, and three dimensional pieces that explore my ongoing obsession with time, transcendence, and the cycle of life. A love of poetry, everyday objects, ancient art and repeat patterns are infused into this body of work. Many are cut into shapes that feel primal to me—like shields, fans, circle or even book forms.

The metallic substrate underneath the imagery creates a subtle glow that changes slightly throughout the day as the light in the room ebbs and flows. This relationship between the metal and light expresses a sense of movement and change that I hope infuses each of these objects with a life of its own.

Spirit Shield

I often cut my works on metal into what I call “symbol shapes.” This one minute video explains my thinking behind doing that and what I hope I communicated through the entire body of work.
